Low Impact Development
Watershed research over the last decade indicates that impervious surfaces have a profound and often irreversible impact on water quality. When impervious cover in upstream watersheds exceeds 10%, water quality declines sharply, potentially impacting wildlife and their habitat. The strong influence of impervious cover on aquatic systems presents a major challenge to communities.
More and more communities are tackling these tough issues by applying LID principles to site design and construction. These principles provide a framework to create both environmentally sensitive and economically viable development.
Linking natural resource conservation, smart site design, and innovative stormwater management techniques is the wave of the future and we look forward to the workshop as the first step towards creating healthier communities in South Alabama.
ACF hosted a LID workshop in April to introduce the concepts of LID to developers, local planning staff and other land use professionals and how these principles are suitable to our climate and soils.
