Dog River Watershed
Dog River is a unique river due to the fact that the majority of the river lies within the city limits of Mobile. This largely tidal water body creates a very popular recreational destination for boaters, fishermen, water-skiers, and others who enjoy the water. This is evidenced by the homes that line the river’s banks, and the many marinas, boat ramps, and restaurants along the river. This proximity, however, creates its own set of challenges.
Dog River and the tributaries that feed it range from deep, wooded creeks to concrete lined drainage ditches extending from the city’s storm water sewers. In fact, Dog River serves as the primary drain for the city of Mobile, ultimately emptying into Mobile Bay, part of the National Estuary Program. Over the years, the river has suffered degradation due to presence of trash, illegal disposal of industrial chemicals, poorly maintained septic tanks, and sedimentation due to poor storm water management practices. Improvements have been made to protect this body of water over the years, but further efforts will be necessary to make a significant impact and ultimately improve it.
Growing up on Dog River, it holds a special place in my heart. The river is a wonderful place for a child to grow up, and with a little work from all of us, it can retain that distinction into the future.
