Fowl River
The Fowl River originates near Theodore, AL and is a contributor to Mobile Bay. It has a sub-watershed encompassing 52,782 acres of land and only two named tributaries: Muddy Creek and Dykes Creek.
According to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, this sub-watershed is predominantly rural, with approximately 5,300 acres in use for crops, 2,600 acres in use as pasture, and 10,900 acres is urban land. However, the majority, 33,400 acres of the sub-watershed, is forested. Although the Fowl River sub-watershed has no centralized urban concentrations, its population is expected to increase, and such growth is expected to contribute to habitat loss and water quality degradation. Fowl River already appears on ADEM’s listing of impaired streams as a result of excessive mercury concentrations.
